This afternoon LHQS member Heejun Byeon successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation entitled "Studying electrons on helium via surface acoustic wave techniques".
Heejun was able to demonstrate the first successful evanescent coupling of a piezoelectric surface acoustic waves (SAW) to the low-dimesional system of electrons floating on the surface of helium. This work opens the door for a new class of SAW-based experiments on this quantum non-degenerate electron system including investigations of the electron liquid to solid phase transition, the resonant coupling of SAWs to plasmons, as well as possible future quantum information science and metrology experiments.
Dr. Byeon will soon be starting as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) at Sandia National Lab. Congrats Heejun on a terrific Ph.D.!
